Cozy Games Aren't Lazy — They're Hard to Make

June 20, 2026 · Marek Nowak

People sometimes dismiss cozy games as low-effort, and playing Meadowfolk for a few weeks convinced me that's backwards. Making something genuinely relaxing without being boring is a real design challenge.

The trick is pacing and personality. Meadowfolk's villagers have routines and moods, and the writing rewards you for paying attention. Without that warmth, a farm sim is just a chore list with nicer graphics.

Progression in a cozy game has to feel optional but present. You should always have a reason to do one more thing without ever feeling like the game is demanding it. That balance is delicate, and plenty of games get it wrong.

My one gripe with Meadowfolk is the timers, which nudge you harder than the mood suggests. But you can play around them, and the underlying warmth carries it through.

If you've written off cozy games, try one properly. The good ones aren't filler — they're some of the most thoughtfully built things on mobile.
